Frank Stasio, The State of Things

The Turkish-American Friendship Association held an informal talk with Frank Stasio on Saturday, May 4th, 2013. Frank Stasio is the NPR radio talk host of the station’s “ The State of Things,” a live program that brings discussion of the issues, personalities, and places of North Carolina to its listeners.

Stasio’s talk was not structured, instead, was totally laid back and intimate with the audience. Throughout the course of his talk, he shared some of his life experiences, talked about the radio show he hosts, and answered questions from the audience.

By the end of his talk, it was clear to the audience that Frank Stasio is passionate about how humanity can be improved and what one can do for a better world.

Stasio, by title, is a journalist, but describes himself as a communicator. And although he has had news anchoring experience in the past, he believes that hosting radio programs such as “The State of Things” is much more rewarding. He sees the program as an “idea show” that helps create and give the audience something to think about and perhaps even act upon.

His view of the radio show he hosts reflects on his view of society as well. It is evident in his radio program that he uses his inner voice and creativity to spread ideas and communicate with the public, which are also skills and factors that he believes have the power to transform societies.

After he finished his talk, the audience proceeded to have lunch in small groups. I had a chance to talk with him about writing and networking on the Internet. He shared several pieces of information with me, but the best thing he told me was that, “if heart and mind are not together in a story, you haven’t communicated anything.” He advised that I write using both my heart and my mind because without the two in the same place, my writing just can’t be complete. How true!

The host of “The State of Things,” Frank Stasio, is a well-meaning human being with great ideas and great communication skills. We enjoyed his talk and appreciated his taking the time to give us some food for thought. As he said, “sometimes the words are not enough. When that happens we need to be quiet and listen to the inner voice deeply and act accordingly.”
